The goal of this class is to familiarize students with the structure(s) and function(s) of mass-media on a strong theoretical background, with focus on the representaiton of masculinity by mainstream media. The course starts with the explanation of the categories of media, followed by the historically outlined impact and progress of media, and continuing with the analysis of the media in present-day, on the basis of various theories, such as sociology, aesthetics, anthropology, etc.  The participants are free to choose the topics of their oral presentations and term-papers, but they must focus of phenomena of mass-media (Facebook, Google, Hollywood movies, J-Pop, anime, etc. included). During the class, ‘Takarazuka Revue’ is taken as a practical example of how mass-media work, but additional examples such as ‘Star Wars’, ‘Harry Potter’, ‘Rurouni Kenshin’ are brought in, too.

Review
This is a course in which mass-media is regarded as a practical phenomenon. As a rule of thumb, the theory is employed as a tool, and explained in such a way to turn it into a means to analysis and comprehend the world. Correspondingly, the so-called ‘participatory observation’is an important method. The books and media phenomena presented are supposed to be studied individually; based on the individual experience (also known as “phenomenological approach”), an open discussion is expected, during which the individual visions are shared, explained and accepted. In particular, Hollywood movies, Japanese anime works, SNS are in the focus, and we shall think about their impact on our perception and processing of politic-economic challenges (such as cultural imperialism, [re-]militarization, climate change, gender issues, refugees) occurring currently worldwide. 
Requirements Fluency in English and Japanese 
Grading Method 3 small essays, each 10% x 3 = 30% (Rurouni Kenshin, Harry Potter, Star Wars)
oral presentation =20% (a topic of your own choice)
term-paper=50% (a topic of your own choice)
