Oral and brain functions such as the sense of taste, salivary secretion, mastication, swallowing, and feeding control will be presented. Students also learn their molecular, cellular and system mechanisms, their physiological relevance, and their pathophysiological aspects caused by functional deficits of specific molecules.

Students study current topics on general physiology, while focusing on oral and brain functions. The capability of designing the research project and constructing the experimental strategies will be cultivated
(Sugita) The mechanisms underlying taste perception, taste-evoked emotional responses, feeding control, and salivary secretion.
(Kitagawa) The mechanisms in development, morphogenesis and functional maintenance of salivary glands and oral tissues.
