Class Objectives
/Class Outline
Established in the city of Hiroshima, whose citizens were once Atomic-bombed, Hiroshima University upholds the cause of universal peace as one of its founding principles. The objectives of this course are thus as follows: (1) to review the damages of atomic bombing that have shaped the current Hiroshima’s identity; and (2) to use Hiroshima as a reference point to explore ways in which universal and eternal peace may be achieved. As such, this course introduces students to the current issues of poverty, famine, immigration, environmental challenges, and local and global conflicts. Representative cases are examined, the ideal state of peace in these cases is discussed from various angles, recognizing the difference between the ideal state and reality in the given socio-political conditions. 
Class Schedule Lesson 1 (Dec. 2): Introduction to the Class: The Atomic-bomb Experience of Hiroshima and its Aspirations for World Peace(Luli).
Lesson 2 (Dec. 9): Multi-faceted Damages Caused by the Atomic Bombings (Kawano).
Lesson 3 (Dec. 16): Radiological Assessments by the United Nations on Nuclear Tests and Accidents (Yasuda).
Lesson 4 (Dec.23): The Effects of Radiation on Exposed People and Their Meaning for Risk Assessment - From Nuclear Disasters in the World Such as Hiroshima, Nagasaki, and Semipalatinsk to Radioactive Microparticles (Hoshi).
Lesson 5 (Jan. 6): The Trajectory of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and a Vision for its Future (Shiga).
Lesson 6 (Jan. 13): The Media and Representations of War and Peace (Luli).
Lesson 7 (Jan. 20): The Challenges of Poverty, Starvation and Food Production in Developing Countries (Kawai).
Lesson 8 (Jan. 27): Traits of Regional Conflicts in the Modern Era and Post-Conflict Peacebuilding (Yamane).
Total of 8 lessons as above.

There will be no examination, but students must submit a final essay report to obtain grades. A list of topics for the essay report will be given during the lessons.

In principle, classes will be conducted in Japanese. Handouts will be in a bilingual format or in a monolingual format with English and Japanese versions for the students to choose from. E-handouts will be uploaded each week within a designated area on Bb9.

Review the contents of each session carefully. Pay attention to related ongoing issues.
Participants are recommended to read the books and/or articles introduced in each class by instructors. 
Requirements In principle, classes will be conducted in Japanese. Handouts will be in a bilingual format or in a monolingual format with English and Japanese versions for the students to choose from. E-handouts will be uploaded each week within a designated area on Bb9. Students who need Japanese-into-English interpretation (oral translation) should contact the instructor by email as soon as possible. 
Grading Method Grades will be awarded on the basis of regular attendance, class participation (30%) and an essay report (70%).

Other As of this year students at the Higashi-Senda Campus can attend this course through video-conferencing facility at their campus. Attendance record will be taken at the beginning of each lesson.
