The objective of this course is to provide students with explanations of psychological, physiological, and pathological characteristics of children with developmental disabilities such as learning disabilities, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, high-functioning autism, and Asperger’s syndrome and those with emotional disturbance, and to provide the students with an opportunity to deepen understanding of an appropriate assessment and support for those children, including lesson making, instruction techniques, and approaches, and a curriculum for them.

Students must purchase Book 1 because it will be used in a workshop to be held in this course. Book2 is a reference book.

Preparation and
Review handouts and your notebook and ask questions in the following class if you have any. Materials for the following lesson will be uploaded on the WebCT. Students must print them out and bring them to the lesson.
Requirements For students in the Program in Special Needs School Teacher Education: This is a course that corresponds to Section 3 of Teachers License Act.
For student in Cluster 2 to 5: This course is for those who wish to obtain a teaching certificate for elementary schools.

Grading Method Students will be evaluated based on class participation (sharing opinions, contribution in discussions and group work, comments on attendance cards) and reports.
Practical Experience Experienced  
Summary of Practical Experience and Class Contents based on it Based on the lecturer's experience as a speech-language pathologist in the U.S., the lecture will give students how the special education systems are different between Japan and the U.S., and how to work with students who have learning disabilities and other related disabilities. 
Message This is expected to be a large-scale course with many students. This course will include not only lectures but also discussions and group work. Your active participation in the lessons is encouraged.
Other The faculty member who have experiences of working at public schools and university in the United States as a speech-language pathologist introduces practical contents based on their experiences.

If you are not an eligible student of this course but wish to take this course, you must consult with the instructor before registration.
