Class Objectives
/Class Outline
This is an advanced course of the Program in Science Education. The purpose of this to learn and understand specialize knowledge of earth science among other science subjects. Particularly, the students will learn the fundamentals that are related to cultivation of learners’ views on the earth and the nature in secondary science education. Specifically, the students will examine teaching contents that will deepen the learners’ understanding of the relations between nature and humans, from the viewpoint of coevolution of the earth and living organisms.

Lesson2: Plate Tectonics( Formation of Plate Tectonics Theory)
Lesson3: Lithosphere and asthenosphere
Lesson4: Earthquakes(Types and Generation Mechanisms of Earthquakes)
Lesson5: Volcano(Distribution of Volcanoes and Generation of Magma)
Lesson6:Crust and Mantle ( Explore the internal structure of the earth surface area)
Lesson7:Core ( Research the structure and composition of the earth’s interior)
Lesson8: Silicate Minerals ( Characteristics of silicate minerals which form rocks)
Lesson9: Rock-Forming Minerals ( Kinds of Characteristics of Rock-form Minerals)
Leson10: Kinds and Characteristics of Rocks( Kinds of Rocks and Rock Cycles)
Lesson11: Sedimentary and metamorphic rocks
Lesson12: Orogeny
Lesson13: Changing Views on the Universe(Changes in Views on the Universe from Ancient Times to Today)

There will be a test to check understanding of the lesson contents at the end of every lesson.

This course will be lecture oriented. No textbooks will be used. Handouts will be distributed in class. Videos and PCs will be used for presentations and others. This course will provide students with a lot of opportunities to use samples and actual specimens to deepen understanding. For important assignments, students will be required to submit reports and have discussions with other students. There will be quizzes. Question cards will be distributed and explanations will be given based on question cards submitted by students. Reference books will be introduced in class when needed.

Grading Method Students will be evaluated based on performance: attendance, reports, and quizzes. As this course will include observations and experiments, attendance will be important. Because this course will mainly focus on knowledge and understanding, students’ grading points will be regarded as students’ achievement.
