Class Objectives

Students will cultivate practical capabilities and skills that will lead to good understanding children in childhood, school & class management, and class & student guidance and comprehensive capabilities, behavior, and skills concerning sociality and cooperative nature through various hands-on experiences with children and adults in the local community, such as nature experience, farm work, seasonal events, creative activities.  
Class Schedule In this course, students will plan and manage a variety of hands-on activities for 80 children collected from all areas of Higashi Hiroshima City, with support not only from students but also the elderly and women in the local community.
The Field Studies on Community Education is a full year course.

Field activities with children will be held on Saturday of the second or 3rd week in the 1st semester and Saturday of the 4th week in the 2nd semester in principle. Hours for the activities with children is from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in principle, but for the students of this course 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. because of preparation, cleanup, and a review meeting.
A weekly regular meeting will be held to review the previous activities and plan for the next activities at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesdays.
Lesson1: Saturday 20 April. The lesson will provide students with a brief overview and the intent of this course to clarify the objectives of this course and raise the students’ awareness of issues.
Lesson2 -: Joint hands-on activities with children

The schedule for this academic year has yet to be determined.
A work flow on and around the day of the hands-on activity with children from May through December is as follows:
1. Before The Day of Activity with Children
Planning Meeting (held every week before the activity): Hands-on activities that are appropriate to the season, such as nature experience, farm work, seasonal events, and creative work, are planed in a group. The students should be cooperate with each other to think about what needs to be prepared for the activity, activity flow, points to keep in mind in implementing the activity, etc. and make an activity booklet (written plan/management plan). Activities on the day should be simulated in advance to check if there is a problem or what needs to keep in mind, if necessary.
2. On The Day of Activity with Children
Planned hands-on activities are implemented with support from the local people. The objective of those activities with children is for the students to deepen understanding of children, cultivate sociality and cooperativity, and acquire practical abilities to lead children and a group.   
3. After The Day of Activity with Children
Meeting to review the field activity (held on a weekly basis immediately after the day of the activity): The students should look back on their activities with children and share what is good and what needs improvement, and try to reflect them in the next activities, through which the students should enhance their abilities to plan and implement activities.
Last lesson: A symposium-style review meeting (February) will be held.  The students look back on their activities in the past year in a group before having a review meeting with all students.


Symposium-style meeting: Each group makes a presentation on their activities in the past 1year to show how the children and the students themselves have grown through those activities. In addition, the students receive feedback from people in the local community who supported their activities and the instructors, which will contribute to enhancing their willingness, behavior, knowledge, and skills needed to be an elementary school teacher.

An orientation will be held during Momoji registration period in the 1st semester (Please check the message board for the announcement). The specific dates of the activities will be informed in the orientation.

Review
After Lesson1, Student should be well aware that they should be responsible for their action since they will actually invite children and carry out activities with support from the local people in this course.
The students should find books and materials about hands-on activities so that they can refer to those when they plan joint hands-on activities with children. Also, the students should actively receive instructions and advices from experts (local people, JA staff, university professors, etc.)
In a meeting to review previous hands-on activities with children, the students should cooperate with each other in a group to make the meeting constructive. The findings in the review meeting should be reflected in the next activities.
- After the last lesson (symposium), the students should look back on their activities in the past 1 year and identify their own challenge and what to do to overcome their issues.
 
Requirements Attending every lessons and preparation activities is a prerequisite.
Please note that there will be work/activities during summer break as well.
The detail will be informed later. An orientation will be held in April. The students must attend the orientation. This course must be taken with Field Studies on Community Education II in the second semester.
