Class Objectives
/Class Outline
Typical of geography is thinking about the associations between the “places” of geographical phenomena. Maps are tools to transcribe “places,” and maps that show particular phenomena (thematic maps) are tools that allow us to consider and think, as well as being a means to express the findings of surveys and observations. Recently, the use of geographic information systems (GIS) in maps, which comprehensively handle and analyze various forms of geographic information, have become the norm. In this class, students will both study the fundamentals as well as being introduced to the basic concepts and research findings from GIS.

3. The history of mapmaking in Japan
4. Changes to cities as seen through topographical maps; topographical diagrams and basic map reading
5. Cartometry and Geodetic datum
6. Map projection systems
7. Features and uses of the main thematic maps; official thematic maps and hematic mapmaking basics, such as landform classification maps, land use maps.
8. Basic representation methods for thematic maps
9. Representation methods for thematic maps
10. The concept and history of GIS
11. Classifications and features of geographic information (geographical data)
12. Usable geographic data (basic map information, digital national land information, address matching, electronic national maps etc.)
13. GIS spatial analysis methods (overlay, buffering etc.)
14. Mesh map expressions and roster calculations (terrain representation, land use representation etc.)
