・The ability and skills to collect and analyze necessary literature or data among various sources of information on individual academic disciplines.
Class Objectives
/Class Outline
The objective of this laboratory work is to understand the basic concepts and principles underlying  materials sciences by learning and performing experiments.

In “Laboratory Work in Material Sciences D”, students will conduct experiments on

I. Colloid
II. Observation of the microscopic dynamics of molecules or atoms in a crystal using light absorption or scattering. They will also learn the fundamentals of these experimental methods and of the microscopic structure and dynamics of materials.
Class Schedule Lesson 1: Introduction: What is a colloid ?
Lesson 2: The basic concepts of statistical mechanics in colloid
Lesson 3: The basic concepts of dynamical light scattering in colloid
Lesson 4: Laboratory work: Observation of synthetic polymer colloid by microscope
Lesson 5: Laboratory work: Measurement of synthetic polymer colloid by light scattering
Lesson 6: Laboratory work: synthesis and measurement of durfactant colloids
Lesson 7: Analyze the experimental data and summarize the results
Lesson 8: Introduction: What is light absorption and scattering?
Lesson 9: The basic concepts of light absorption and scattering of materials.
Lesson 10: Laboratory work: Raman scattering of simple molecules
Lesson 11: Laboratory work: Raman scattering of simple molecules
Lesson 12: Laboratory work: Raman scattering of crystals
Lesson 13: Laboratory work: Infrared absorption of simple molecules
Lesson 14: Analyze the experimental data and summarize the results.
Lesson 15:

Each student have to submit a lab report for every theme by an announced deadline
Handouts will be provided in each lesson.
PC or AV used in
Whiteboard and/or blackboard are used. Projections and PowerPoint will also be used.
Suggestions on
Preparation and
Read the handouts very carefully before each lesson and fully understand the concepts of the experiments. Reviewing the basic knowledge of physical measurements and error analysis is also useful.
Requirements This laboratory work is combined with Laboratory work in Materials Sciences D, and students must  register for both classes concurrently.
Grading Method Active participation in experiments approximately 50% and laboratory report approximately 50%.
