The purpose of this class is to learn basic knowledge and techniques for analyses and interpretation of data on environmental sciences.

Class Objectives

To learn basic knowledge and experimental techniques required in analyses and interpretation of natural environments through laboratory and field studies. 
Class Schedule ・Guidance (1: Representative)
Methods of registration, usage of the laboratory, preparation for experiments, and others.
・Analysis of forest ecosystem function (2-4: Nakatsubo, Toda)
Tree biomass estimation by allometric relationships and programming exercise.
・Experiment in forest meteorology (5-7: Tsuchiya)
A forest mitigates excessive increase in temperature and decrease in humidity under the canopy. In this experiment, basic meteorological measurements are carried out at a bare soil and at a forest floor to understand the mitigation effects of forest from heat balance components of solar radiation.
・Permeabilities and pore structures of rocks (8-11: Yokoyama, Hirayama, Niko)
We will measure the permeability and the size and shape of pores by a permeability test and a water-expulsion method.  Stereographic projection: In order to quantitatively describe surfaces and their directions observed in strata or faults, we will study stereographic projection.
・Fundamental laboratory work in physiology of plants and their rhizosphere.
