The course will be dedicated mainly to lectures, but to in-class discussions and the videotapes as well.

This course is provided as a part of "Peace Subject". Peace does not simply mean the absence of war. It is important to seek after the sustainable society without structural violence, such as environmental destruction, human rights infringement, and poverty that could take away a person's inherently inalienable rights. In the age of globalization, these problems are fundamentally transnational, and beyond the scope with which any one country can solely deal. This course aims to examine such transnational issues from the viewpoint of the international politics.

This course purports to consider (1) the challenges to be tackled to realize the sustainable society, (2) required fundamental and scientific knowledge for the solution, (3) the inseparable relationship between politics and global efforts to tackle these challenges with scientific knowledge, and (4) the fact that scientific knowledge itself could be a social construction. Through lectures and discussions, this course aims to help participants (a) to understand that the challenges in realizing the sustainable society have a great impact on our living environmen, and (b)to develop the skills to express their own opinions effectively.

lesson6: Global economy and the environment
lesson7: Poverty issues
lesson8: Refugees and immigrants
lesson9: Nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament
lesson10: What can be done for the abolition of nuclear weapons
lesson11: The controversy over nuclear energy for peaceful purpose
lesson12: Science and technology and the "risk society"
lesson13: Gender issues
lesson14: Urbanization
lesson15: Summary and final exam

Participants are reguired to submit an individual paper on the monument for peace you visit to complete this course. A final
exam shall be given as well.

Through this course, students are expected:
・to think these problems from the viewpoints of your life
・to cultivate your own idea by exchanging opinions with others
・to devote your full attention to the news and articles about a variety of issues such as climate change, natural resources, and nuclear energy

Grading Method ・Individual paper on the monument you visit 40%
・Final exam 40%
・Participation in class 20%

Other The visiting report is an essential assignment. When you fail to submit the report, the credit will not be given.
