  Special lecture: The repetition of reading important literature, reporting by students, discussions, Q & As, further studies and researches.
  Although this course is scheduled for Thursday afternoons, it would be available on another time slot in view of attendees' convenience.

/Class Outline
  ・Objective: To develop and fulfill contents of civics education, understands the overview of criminal justice concretely and accurately through reading of latest textbook concerning criminal justice system. Then, has students acquire social science analytical capability to explain how the Japanese criminal justice reaches the current state and evaluate function of legal system objectively, and improves capabilities as civics teacher and teaching contents development ability significantly.
 ・Theme : To understand overview of Japan and U.S. criminal justice system from law comparison and social-legal study points of view.  
Class Schedule   Student must report something and discuss on at least one topic in every class.

  Outline of class
・For all lessons, students are expected to read the specified English documents in advance, summarize the section they are in charge, and make presentations on research results of relevant factors with logical consideration added. Results of follow-up study after discussion need to be posted as needed on electronic bulletin board for this class.

 This course covers criminology theories. The reason why death penalty abolition movement isn’t so active in Japan is the fact that both reformist group and progress advocates have conservative view of society and are lack of viewpoints that new comfortable society should be established by themselves. Through learning of logic on criminal phenomenon that seems to lead to collapse of the society, new logical horizon that isn’t be surprised by any theory will be seen.
 In particular, Japanese courts are centralized by the central government, but countries with federal system have variety of judiciaries. Furthermore, through reading of this English document, you may be able to understand why jury and citizen participation systems are in place in U.S./U.K. courts. It will dispel a misconception for joint judge-jury system. It would be wonderful if you can understand diversity of judicial branches concretely and objectively, and consider it through comparison with similar system in Japan.
In 15 lessons, selects/reads some of the chapters from the textbook shown below. Ideally, reads one chapter per lesson (20 pages), but would be several pages/lesson until students get used to terminologies. Important to have a will to read the whole book describing specialized contents in English.

Preparation and
Review
  As shown above, reading of English documents and additional understanding through Japanese documents are preliminarily and repetitively requested.   
Requirements   Subject area "civics" related subject.
  Depending on student’s interest and intention, course correction can be done within the judiciary system. Specifically, themes such as “court’s ruling action and law change” and “U.S. state supreme court and popularly-elected judge’s ruling action” “reality of U.S. federal supreme court” “practice case of direct democracy in U.S.” are included in the syllabus of other classes the instructor is responsible for. So, if students are interested, students can refer to them. Also, students can chose documents on practice of lawyers and prosecutors.  
 As all of them are written in English, students may have difficulty in reading. But those documents will be read in accordance with student’s research interest and field.
 As a basic rule, in case of lecture (2 units), in addition to 30-hour class of 15 lessons, 60-hour preparation and review is necessary at minimum. Students must look into the dictionary for unknown words, study basic concepts, models, and examples adequately beforehand.
★ If students send e-mail to the instructor to inform their questions and expectation related to their research direction, it would be beneficial because the instructor can be ready and start the class immediately without wasting time.
※The class hour on the time table happens to be Thursday afternoon for the convenience of registration (to avoid overlapping with other classes). From the 2nd lesson, the convenient time will be determined through discussion with students.  
Grading Method   Students to be comprehensively assessed by attendance status, reports and responses to questions, questions to reports of other students and the contents of lecture, discussions, posting to the class electric bulletin board.  Students will not pass if they are absent 5 times.  2 times of tardiness is equivalent to 1 absence.   
Message   According to Article 15 of Standards for the Establishment of Graduate Schools, “In the standard, 1 credit course must include contents that require 45 hour learning” by refereeing to Article 21 section 2 of Standards for Establishment of Universities. So, in order to have 2 credits, be sure to perform 60-hour “learning” in addition to 30-hour lessons.
