/Class OutlineWhile thermodynamics treats systems at equilibrium where temperature is homogeneous, heat transfer treats systems with non-equilibrated temperature and discusses temperature distribution and its time change or rate of heat transfer. In this lecture, conduction of heat and convection heat transfer are studied, which are the modes of heat transfer.

1) Understand the framework of heat transfer and learn fundamental knowledge of heat transfer and temperature (B-2)

2) Derive fundamental equations from Fourier's Law and learn fundamentals of conduction of heat (B-2)

3) Learn boundary layer approximation, which is the basic concept of convection, and deepen the understanding of convective heat transfer (B-2)

1. Fundamental of Heat transfer [1]: Three modes of heat transfer are explained.

2. Steady state heat transfer [2-5]: Derive fundamental equations from Fourier's Law and obtain analytical and numerical solutions for 1 and 2 dimensional systems

3. Unsteady state heat transfer [6,7]: Analytical solution is obtained using series and Laplace transform for the system where surface temperature or surface heat flux changes. Numerical solution is also mentioned.

4. Laminar flow heat transfer [9-12]: Based on the boundary layer approximation that is the basic concept of convective heat transfer, equation of continuity, equation of motion, and equation of energy are derived, and strict solution and approximated solution by profile method are calculated for flow along the flat plate and flow inside cylindrical tube.

5. Turbulent flow heat transfer [13-15]: Analogy between momentum transfer and heat transfer in turbulent flow is explained, and correlation for heat transfer based on dimensional analysis is discussed.

Final exam is conducted.

To deepen understanding, homework is given for every class. Its solution is explained at the beginning of the next class, and the students are to check the solution by themselves, and re-submit it. Submission is not mandatory, but it is considered when the score of the final exam does not reach the acceptable level.

Requirements Grading Method Achievement is evaluated by the written exam. The evaluation is made by this achievement and students with the score higher than 60 % gets the credit. The evaluation is made by final exam (80 %) and small exam given in each class (20 %). When this score does not reach 60 %, submission situation of homework is considered up to 20 %.
