This course is dealing with some theories discussing Japan’s modern Emperor. The Constitution of the Empire Japan (Meiji Constitution) described the Emperor as the head of Empire, combining in Himself the rights of sovereignty, and exercise them. Meiji Constitution seems to give a great political power to the Emperor. In fact His Majesty really had great authority but had far less real political power. In Meiji, Taisyo and Syowa era, how did Japanese intellectuals discuss His dignity, political power, and position? Through reading their old texts, we would like to think about the Emperor in contemporary Japan because those old text have covered major issues about Japan’s Emperor. In this course we are going to read Fukuzawa Yukiti, Meiji great thinker. Also Fukuzawa's text abut the Emperor was used a text book tought to young Crown Prince Akihito, later "Heisei Emperor".
