Aims are to understand how the different molecules, cells, tissues, and organs of the human body work together to maintain life, and to help understand their abnormal function in disease.

After studying this subject, you should be able to:
・ Understand the basis of the cell/neuron structure and function.
・ Define the resting membrane potential, and describe the changes in ionic channels that underlie the action potential.
・ Describe the mechanisms underlying muscle cell excitation-contraction coupling.
・ Understand the main molecular and morphological features of chemical and electrical transmission at synapses.
・ Explain the essential elements of sensory perception and coding, and describe the neural pathways that transmit sensory information.
・ Name the neurotransmitter released by autonomic nerves, and outline the functions of the autonomic neurons.
・ List the hormones, explain the machineries that regulate hormone secretion, and briefly describe the action of each.
・ Describe the essential elements and functional significance of the gastrointestinal system.
・ Understand the origin of the electrical activity of the heart, and outline the cardiovascular regulatory mechanisms.
・ Understand the function and regulatory mechanisms of the respiratory system involved in gas transport and pH control.
・ Understand the essential elements of the renal function of body fluid homeostasis.
