			The class will be conducted primarily by means of interactive activities in the classroom. However, a flipped learning approach will be utilised, in which students prepare for in-person discussions using materials uploaded onto Moodle.

学習の成果	By the end of the course, successful students will have a good understanding of several key aspects of British and American culture, and be able to cope with a variety of cross-cultural situations.
授業の目標・概要等	In this course, students will explore and discuss various aspects of British and American culture in depth.  Parallels and differences between Britain and the USA will be investigated, and comparisons made with Japan.  Throughout the course, a variety of activities will be used to promote the development of the students' English language skills.
授業計画	第１回  Introduction and overview of course 第２回  Cultural Stereotypes:  Students will examine the stereotypes associated with British, American, and Japanese people and customs 第３回  Cultural Stereotypes (contd.) 第４回  Geography: Students will learn about the countries in the UK (population, climate, places of interest, etc.) 第５回  Geography (contd.) 第６回  British Society: Students will examine facts and figures about the British people, and investigate issues such as social class, lifestyles, and youth culture 第７回  British Society (contd.) 第８回  Review of lessons 1-7: Students will make presentations in small groups; a review test will be given 第９回  Customs and Traditions: Students will look at special days, festivals and traditions in Britain, the USA, and Japan 第10回  Customs and Traditions (contd.) 第11回  Varieties of English: The focus will be on differences between British English and American English 第12回  Varieties of English (contd.) 第13回  The Culture I Know: Students will investigate various aspects of their own country and culture 第14回  The Culture I Know (contd.) 第15回  Review of lessons 9-14: Small-group presentations Regular home assignments will be given, as well as a final exam and report. Please note that the exact content of the syllabus may change according to the students' particular interests and goals.

予習・復習への アドバイス	Students will be expected to prepare for each week's class in advance, and to review the previous week's lesson.
履修上の注意 受講条件等	TOEIC 650 or equivalent required.  The class will be limited to a maximum of 30 students.  A variety of materials will be used including textbooks, newspaper and magazine articles, material from the Internet, TV broadcasts, and DVD recordings.  Students will be required to  participate in discussions and debates, make short presentations, and carry out mini surveys.  Regular home assignments will be given.
成績評価の基準等	Students will be evaluated on the basis of their participation in class, home assignments, and the final exam and report.
