The class will be conducted primarily by means of interactive activities in the classroom. However, a flipped learning approach will be utilised, in which students prepare for in-person discussions using materials uploaded onto Moodle.

学習の成果By the end of this course, students will have developed the language, critical thinking skills, and awareness of cross-cultural ideas and themes necessary for successful communication across cultures. 
授業の目標・概要等 This course follows on from "British and American Culture and Literature I”. Students will further develop their ability to use English for cross-cultural communication, and learn more about other cultures and ways of life.  The focus will be on English-speaking countries, in particular Britain and the USA, and a variety of personal and cultural topics will be introduced. 
授業計画 第1回  Introduction and overview of course
第2回  Transportation and Travel: Students will consider the advantages and disadvantages of different forms of transportation, and talk about travel in Japan and overseas

第4回  Environmental Issues: Students will study environmental problems and look at what is being done to protect the environment in different countries

第6回  Music and Entertainment: The focus will be on the cultural importance of music, and in particular the influence of British and American music around the world

第8回  Review of lessons 1-7: Students will make presentations in small groups; a review test will be given
第9回  Celebrations and Special Occasions in the UK, US, and Japan: Important holidays, festivals, and celebrations will be introduced and discussed

第11回  Body Language and Gestures: Students will look at the body language that people use in Japan, the UK/US, and other cultures

第13回  Social Appropriateness / Taboos across Cultures: Students will learn about what types of behaviour are socially acceptable in different cultures

Regular home assignments will be given, as well as a final exam and report.

Please note that the exact content of the syllabus may change according to the students' particular interests and goals.

Students will be expected to prepare for each week's class in advance, and to review the previous week's lesson. 
履修上の注意
受講条件等
TOEIC 600 or equivalent expected.  The class will be limited to a maximum of 30 students.  A variety of materials will be used including textbooks, newspaper and magazine articles, material from the Internet, TV broadcasts, and video recordings.  Students will be required to participate in discussions and debates, make short presentations, and carry out mini surveys.  Regular home assignments will be given. 
成績評価の基準等 Students will be evaluated on the basis of their participation in class, home assignments, and an exam at the end of the course.
