If students who got admitted in 2017 or before take this course, it is regarded as a “Package-Based Subject”. The latter group of students cannot take this course as an “Area Course”. |

学習の成果 | ・Building-up of understanding that there exists a science of human sensibility (in Japanese: kansei), beauty, Taste, imagination, and Art. ・Building-up of re-considering the possibility of a comparative studies between the western and the eastern (especially the Japanese). |

・To understand the methodology of Aesthetics as a science. ・To understand the aesthetical category of the Sublime, defferent from the Beautiful. ・To examine the possibility of applying the Sublime as the Western analysis-concept into the Eastern or Japanese arts. |

《Aesthetics, Philosophy of Sensibility》 Lectured by Professor Hideki KUWAJIMA(1970-) at Hiroshima University
★Main Theme of the Class(Term4 open class): “Arts and Landscapes, divided into the Sublime vs. the Beautiful”
・Lecture1-2: Introduction: Explanation of the aim and subjects in this class.
・Lecture3-4(Lecture and Discussion): 【Topic 1:Natural Landscape】 Landscape aesthetics of the sacred island Aki-no-Miyajima in Hiroshima, in terms of the sublime, grace, and the picturesque.
・Lecture5-6(Lecture and Discussion): What is an aesthetic category? What is the sublime in the history of aesthetics?: depending upon the thoughts by Edmund Burke and Immanuel Kant.
・Lecture7-8(Lecture and Discussion): 【Topic 2:Art Genre, Parallel of Arts】Can we really draw and paint the mountainous Alpines in canvas?: Classism vs. Romanticism, Painting vs. Poetry, or Figurative vs. Abstract.
・Lecture9-10(Lecture and Discussion): 【Topic 3:Irish Cinema 1】 Which cinema represents the sublime, and why?: in comparison with Irish films: The Quiet Man(dir. John Ford) and Man of Aran(dir. Robert Flaherty) etc.
・Lecture11-12(Lecture and Discussion): 【Topic 3(continued):Irish Cinema 2】 Which cinema represents the sublime, and why?: in comparison with Irish films: The Quiet Man(dir. John Ford) and Man of Aran(dir. Robert Flaherty) etc.
・Lecture13-14(Lecture and Discussion): 【Topic 4:Barbarism vs. Civilization】Applied Studies into the comparative Studies in Jomon art-spirit vs. Yayoi/Muromachi art-spirit.
・Lecture15: Conclusion and Final Examination concerning the contrast diagrams mentioned abouve(or Assignment of Final Report).
●For each topic, students will write a short report to serve as the basis for group discussions in the class. ●The final examination is planned to be an essay writing task, based on the content covered in the class. |

Basically English is used in the class. However, depending upon the theme, the Japanese technical terms, or kanji/hiragana, is sometimes appeared in the class, to promote understanding the points. |
