This course is for HUSA students and will be conducted in English. Please note that this course does not provide the credits necessary to obtain a teaching license for special-needs schools. Japanese students who wish to take this course should contact the person in charge of the class in advance.

授業の目標・概要等 To deepen understanding of the special needs education, we will explain special education schools and classes, their roles and concepts, and how classes are constructed. 
授業計画 lesson 1 - Orientation
lesson 2 - History of Special Needs Education in Japan
lesson 3 - Education for people with vision disorders or auditory disorders
lesson 4 - Education for people with intellectual disabilities or physical disabilities
lesson 5 - Education for students with health issues
lesson 6 - Education for students who are Neurodiverse
lesson 7 - Target, teaching content, and methods of independent activities
lesson 8 - Significance of an individual education support plan and how to create one
lesson 9 - Assistive Technology to support students in Special Education schools
lesson 10 - Collaborative learning and reasonable accommodations
lesson 11 - Outline of special needs education in kindergarten, elementary schools
lesson 12 - Outline of special needs education in junior high schools
lesson 13 - The role of special needs education coordinator in elementary and junior high schools
lesson 14 - Overview of teaching in that resource room system (the resource class system)

The class is taught by highly experienced teachers and researchers in the field of special and inclusive education. The main instructor has been a teacher in a special school setting and a special classroom setting . The experiences of the lecturers will be instrumental in assisting the students to grow their knowledge and understanding of special education and inclusion.
