授業の目標・概要等 This course will provide an overview of the family from a sociological perspective (e.g., the functions of the family, changing family and marriage forms, theoretical and research frameworks in studying the family). It will emphasize how diversity – including race/ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and social class – influences the structure and functions of the family. The overall aim of this course is to help students develop knowledge and skills to challenge the normative understanding of the family.

Lesson 3 (Dec. 13) Race, ethnicity, and immigration
Lesson 4 (Dec. 20) Midterm exam*
Lesson 5 (Dec. 25) Background on topics covered in the guest lecture
Lesson 6 (Jan. 10) Balancing work and family roles
Lesson 7 (Jan. 24) Wrap up and review
Lesson 8 (Jan. 31) Final exam*
*The midterm and final exams will be 45 minutes long.

アドバイス Lesson 1-3, 6: Come to class prepared to exchange ideas and criticism of the assigned readings.
Lesson 4: Study for the midterm exam, which will cover all the topics covered in Family Diversity I and Family Diversity II by that time.
Lesson 7/8: Review the topics covered in Family Diversity I and Family Diversity II during the term.

履修上の注意
受講条件等 Students must take Family Diversity I and Family Diversity II together.
The maximum enrollment for this course is forty. If the number of students who have registered for the course exceeds the enrollment limit, a lottery will be held at the first class meeting.
