授業の目標・概要等 On the basis of the first and second laws of thermodynamics, which are learned already in the course, “Physical chemistry I”, the following terms are focused on in this course.     
1. Able to understand the basic terms and concepts associated with phase equilibrium of pure and mixed substances and explain them.
2. Able to derive basic formulae on phase equilibrium of pure and mixed substances and explain them
3. Able to calculate thermodynamic properties using basic formulae on the phase equilibrium.
4. Able to explain various types of the phase equilibrium and understand them fully.
5. Able to explain chemical equilibrium, equilibria response under various conditions, and electrode reactions with electrochemical potential.

lesson5: Physical transformation of pure substances (Chap.4: location of phase boundaries).
lesson6: Simple mixtures (Chap.5: partial molar quantities).
lesson7: Simple mixtures (Chap.5: thermodynaics of mixing).
lesson8: mid-term examination and summary of physical transformations of pure substances and simple mixtures (lessons 3-7).
lesson9: Simple mixtures (Chap.5: properties of solutions).
lesson10: Simple mixtures (Chap.5: phase diagrams of binary systems).
lesson11: Simple mixtures (Chap.5: various phase diagrams of binary systems, and activities).

Enough preparation and review of each class are necessary because many contents are taught in each class.
Lesson 1:Solid understanding of basic concepts of thermodynamics (the first and the second laws of thermodynamics).

Lesson 3: Understanding of phase diagrams.
Lesson 4: Understanding of phase rule.
Lesson 5: Understanding of phase transitions.
Lesson 6: Understanding of partial molar quantities.
Lesson 7:Understanding of conception of chemical potential and thermodynamic description of mixtures.
Lesson 8: Review on  physical transformations of pure substances and simple mixtures (lessons 3-7). .
Lesson 9: Understanding of colligative properties.
Lesson 10: Understanding of phase diagrams in binary systems.    
Lesson 11: Understanding of various phase diagrams in binary systems,  and activities
Lesson 12:Understanding of relation between chemical equilibrium and Gibbs energy.

履修上の注意
受講条件等
Students belonging to the applied chemistry and biotechnology courses should take this class and in chemical engineering should take the class instructed by Professor Takishima. 
成績評価の基準等 Up to 100 points for the mid-term and final examinations (50%-weighted for each), and weekly class attendance. A total point of 60 and above is accepted as passable. The weights for the five objects are 20% for each in grading.
